NAKAZAWA SHINICHI

Nakazawa Shinichi was born in 1956 in Tokyo and is a self-taught artist, having studied at Rikkyo University. Although he didn’t follow a traditional fine art education path, his dedication and originality have earned him international acclaim. His works appear in prestigious collections such as the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He has held solo exhibitions throughout Japan—including Tokyo, Osaka, and Chiba—as well as in London, Singapore, and Thailand.

Nakazawa is best known for his Japanese intaglio prints, combining delicate etching with the rich textures of gold, silver, or platinum leaf. At times, he oxidizes the metallic layers to add depth and variation. His compositions often feature bold, rectangular blocks of metal overlays, occasionally paired with elegant classical Japanese calligraphy. Through this modern interpretation of traditional aesthetics, Nakazawa achieves balance and symmetry within limited space—creating a serene and refined visual impact.

Inspired by 17th-century artist Sotatsu, who paired decorative painting with literary text, Nakazawa Shinichi follows a similar path. He takes classical themes and reimagines them through modern printmaking. As a result, his works resonate with both traditional and contemporary audiences.
