Born in 1956 in Osaka, Japan, Shiomi studied at Tama Art University, Tokyo and the Royal College of Arts, London. She began painting at the age of fourteen and transitioned to printmaking at twenty. Shiomi chose the traditional Japanese woodblock technique, using the baren to spread water-based ink onto handmade Japanese paper. Her work draws inspiration from the ukiyo-e master Hokusai, particularly with themes like Mount Fuji and ocean waves. Her prints often explore ideas of space, transition, and the world beyond—such as a room leading to a landscape. More recently, her imagery has evolved to include architectural elements. Over 18 years, Shiomi completed a series of 100 small-format prints titled “Mitate”, finished in 2017. Please contact us for available prints from this collection.
