SAWADA TETSURO

Tetsuro Sawada (1935–1999) was born in Hokkaido and studied at Musashino Art College. He later expanded his training across North and South America, as well as in Spain and France. This global experience shaped his unique approach to Japanese silkscreen art. Sawada’s works appeared in solo exhibitions in São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Honolulu, and Vancouver, and his prints entered major collections, including the British Museum, Cleveland Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Sawada became known for his smooth colour blending and careful technique. He often used the bokashi method, a Japanese printing style where one colour fades gently into another without any harsh line. Each colour was mixed by hand to ensure exact tones. He added contrast by placing shiny inks next to matte ones. This balance gave his prints their calm, glowing presence and made them popular worldwide.
